Bootea Shakes Review

The aim of this product is to give users an additional nutritional support when they are attempting to lose weight. It is suggested that to achieve maximum weight loss results users should follow the recommended eating plan at least whilst using any other of their products. The Shakes themselves are mixed berry flavoured. The manufacturers state that they can be used as an individual supplement as well as in conjunction with the Bootea Teatox line.

Bootea Shakes Claimed weight loss benefits

The manufacturers of Bootea Shakes claim that their product can help to tackle weight loss by acting specifically as an appetite suppressant curbing cravings and making users feel fuller for longer. As well as this, although it is not claimed by the company, there are also some ingredients used in the product that are believed to have beneficial effects on the metabolic rate. In addition to both of these, the website does provides a diet plan for users to follow.

How Bootea Shakes Works

Green Tea 538
The Bootea Shakes are low in calories and claim to work primarily as an appetite suppressant helping users to consume less food without feeling hungry. This is assumedly down to its fibre content of which each sachet contains 2.3g. As well as this, the shakes appear to act as an additional support to the body given the fact that they contain some essential vitamins that might otherwise be lost through a reduced food intake. When these two factors are combined, the shakes are said to keep users’ minds off snacking and simultaneously help them to focus on achieving their weight loss goals.

Glucomannan

The addition of Glucomannan is believed to give weight loss products their appetite suppressing qualities. It is said to work by interacting with liquids that are found in the stomach. Because it is a fibrous substance, it acts like a sponge absorbing these liquids and as a result it is claimed to expand inside of the stomach. This enlarged bulk is what is thought to create the sense of fullness that a person experiences, because the stomach is physically fuller, making them feel less hungry. This feeling is said to last for quite a while due to the fact that the Glucomannan becomes sticky. This is said to make it harder for the body to digest so it stays in the stomach for a prolonged period. It is also claimed to absorb some of the liquid found in the digestive tract which allegedly reduces the body’s ability to absorb carbohydrates also helping with weight loss.

Guarana

Most of the weight loss properties attributed to Guarana are often linked to the high amount of caffeine that it contains. Due to this, it is commonly referred to as a stimulant and is believed to work by stimulating the central nervous system. Most beneficial for weight loss though is the fact that it is allegedly able to increase the rate at which thermogenesis happens inside the body. In practical terms, an increase in this process means that the body can burn more calories because it is using up stored energy at a faster rate. This in turn would help to increase the metabolism of those who have consumed it since more food needs to be broken down to replace that energy.

Vitamin B Mix

The manufacturers state that this mix includes vitamins B3, B6 and B12. Vitamin B3, also known as Niacin, is claimed to help maintain a normal metabolic rate and provide an energy boost. Vitamin B6 is believed to help with weight loss due to its role in metabolising protein and Vitamin B12 is thought to help to maintain the central nervous system as well as having beneficial metabolic effects. As well as allegedly possessing these properties specifically linked to weight, all of these vitamins help to keep the body functioning at an optimal level which is necessary to keep healthy and focused if users are on a calorie controlled diet.

Green Tea Extract

Much like the Guarana, the extract from Green Tea leaves is also believed to have stimulant like effects such as the ability to increase mental focus and energy. This is down to the fact that it too contains an amount of caffeine. In addition to this though, it is also made up of a number of catechins. These are a type of flavonoid which are usually found in both plants and food. Most frequently associated with its weight loss ability is one in particular called EGCG. This is believed to work as an antioxidant in the body and has also been linked to increases in both the rate of metabolism and enhanced fat burning in overweight or obese human subjects.

Key Ingredients

Caffeine 538
The manufacturers of this product do make a full list of ingredients available for consumers to view on their website. They also provide some mandatory nutritional information about the levels of fat and salt etc. that the shakes contain. What they do not make explicit though is how much of each weight loss ingredient is included in the powder but for health and safety purposes they have stated that each serving contains 80mg of Caffeine. Most ingredients used in the shakes are used to create flavour and they all are natural. There are, however, 4 specifically connected to weight loss.

Glucomannan

Glucomannan is a natural dietary fibre which comes from the root of the Konjac plant. Originating in Asia, it has been used for over 2,000 years in Chinese medicine to treat a variety of conditions ranging from asthma to skin diseases. Its leaves have even been used as an insect repellent. More commonly though, it is used in foods and cosmetic products because it is known to be a gelling agent and a thickener. It has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration as a food additive and as a binder in meat products but not for weight loss.

Guarana

Much like the Glucomannan, the Food and Drug Administration have not yet assessed Guarana extract with regards to its use as a weight loss aid. This potentially means that not all of the medical properties claimed or risks associated with it have been discovered. What is known however is that the ingredient resembles a coffee bean in shape and was originally grown in South America. It contains many stimulant compounds including theophylline, theobromine and of course caffeine, and has been used as an herbal supplement to treat headaches and loose stools as well as being used in some soft drinks.

Vitamin B Mix

All 3 B vitamins included in these shakes occur naturally in the foods that we eat. Supplementing them is important if users will be consuming less as the body needs to have enough of each vitamin to function properly and they cannot be stored for later. They all play vital roles in the metabolic functioning of the body but most usually associated with weight loss in particular is Vitamin B3. This is often used medically for purposes such as lowering cholesterol, risk of heart attack and as a treatment for coronary artery disease. These shakes contain 2.003mg of B vitamins.

Green Tea Extract

Extracts from Green Tea are well known within the diet industry for their catechins and caffeine content. The specific amounts of these will vary depending on where the extract has come from but unfortunately the manufacturers of the Bootea shakes have not indicated how much of the products’ caffeine comes from this ingredient. The extract itself comes from the leaves of the Camellia Sinensis plant and the whole leaf is commonly consumed as a warm, stewed beverage. The extract has previously been used as a traditional herbal remedy in China to treat high cholesterol and stomach problems amongst other conditions.

Clinical Studies

Clinical Researcher 538
A clinical study is a trial carried out by scientists with the aim of testing a particular ingredient. Controlled conditions are used in order to validate/ disprove any claims made about it concerning its effectiveness or safety. The manufacturers of this product do not claim that is has undergone any clinical testing as a weight loss aid and, in addition to this, they do not make any references to clinical studies concerning any of the ingredients in an individual capacity. Our own research, however, has made clear that there have been some trials which involve the 4 weight loss ingredients.

Glucomannan

There is a relatively large amount of published data concerning Glucomannan in terms of weight loss and most of these are positive clinical studies that have been done solely on this ingredient. One of the earliest dating back to 1984 attempted to demonstrate the beneficial effects of the ingredient on obese subjects. This trial lasted for a period of 8 weeks over which one group of subjects were given purified Glucomannan fibre as a food supplement. This was given in 1g doses made up of two 500mg capsules and each dose was to be taken with 8oz of water, 3 times per day, 1 hour prior to every meal. The second group were given an equivalent placebo. During the trial the subjects were specifically instructed not to change their eating or exercise habits. This fact is particularly useful in terms of the Bootea shakes since it does not appear to be strictly necessary that users follow the suggested eating plan. The results showed a significant mean weight loss of 5.5lbs in those using the Glucomannan and as well as this, serum cholesterol and LDL cholesterol were significantly reduced in this group. This does suggest then that the Glucomannan can affect the absorption of food inside the body and implies that the subjects may have eaten less whilst taking it.

Guarana

The weight loss effects of Guarana were investigated in a trial carried out in 2001. Again, this study concerned overweight human subjects (67 in total) and lasted for 8 weeks. Throughout the 2 months the body weight and metabolism of all of the subjects were measured along with any cardiovascular changes. Those in the treatment group were given Guarana in the form of an herbal dietary supplement containing 72mg per day of ephedrine alkaloids and 240mg per day of caffeine. The remaining subjects received a placebo. The results gathered at the end of the 8 week period demonstrated that those subjects who had been made to take the Guarana had lost significantly more weight and in particular more fat than those given the placebo treatment. Based on this outcome, the researchers concluded that the Guarana could effectively help to reduce weight and more specifically it could promote short term weight loss.

Vitamin B Mix

Unfortunately there have been no clinical studies concerning all 3 of the B vitamins used in the shakes in combination with each other in relation to weight loss. Furthermore, there is also a lack of clinical evidence in terms of both Vitamin B6 and Vitamin B12 when used on their own. This is not surprising considering the supportive nature of these ingredients as essential vitamins. It also does not necessarily mean that B vitamins are not capable of inducing weight loss, however, since there have been clinical studies involving the last vitamin, B3. Research carried out by the Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies for the European Food Safety Authority actually suggests that this vitamin contributes to ‘normal energy yielding metabolism’ which, in some cases, could induce weight loss when given as a supplement. This is only likely to be the case in people who are lacking in Vitamin B3 though and have a slower metabolic rate because of this to start with. There was no indication of an increased intake having any other metabolism enhancing effects beyond this normal rate.

Green Tea Extract

In contrast, plenty of research has been done into the potential weight loss effects of Green Tea. One trial in particular that took place in 1999, although relatively small, provided some very positive results in terms of energy expenditure and fat oxidation in human subjects. The study was done on 10 healthy males and lasted for a duration of only 24 hours. During the trial, each of the subjects was given 1 of 3 treatments. This included a Green Tea extract made up of 50mg caffeine and 90mg Epigallocatechin gallate, a 50mg dose of caffeine on its own, or a placebo. The subjects were administered these 3 times per day with their meals. The results demonstrated that the Green Tea extract had significantly increased the energy expenditure of the subjects by approximately 4% when compared to those receiving the placebo. This suggests that the thermogenic rate of those subjects had been increased with corresponding increases in metabolism. There is however a limitation as to how much this study backs up the use of Bootea Shakes since no information about the quantity of EGCG in the extract used has been given.

Bootea Shakes Side Effects

Woman With Stomach Ache 538
There is no mention of any side effects associated with using these shakes on the manufacturers’ website, and it is in fact emphasised that they are free from artificial sweeteners, colours and preservatives. Just because a product contains all natural ingredients, however, is not necessarily an indication that it comes free of any unwanted symptoms. As well as concerns specific to the use of Glucomannan, some of the ingredients used in the shakes are known for their caffeine content and this alone can cause some, admittedly mild, but still undesired effects.

Glucomannan

There are concerns over the effect that this ingredient can have once inside the body. It is warned that Glucomannan has been linked to severe obstructions of the oesophagus and gastrointestinal areas due to its ability to absorb and expand. This is relatively uncommon in healthy individuals and tends to be the case where the Glucomannan is taken on its own in tablet form. It is also said that due to the interactions it has with the body’s absorption process, potentially dangerous effects could materialise for those with diabetes. The most common effects though are relatively minor and include loose stools, flatulence and bloating.

Guarana

The most common side effects linked to this ingredient are those associated with most stimulants. They include but are not limited to anxiety, loose stools, headaches, nausea, insomnia, vomiting and tremors. More seriously though, Guarana specifically has been said to cause more severe side effects such as skin rashes, itching, difficulty breathing, swelling of the mouth or face, irregular heartbeat and even seizures. These are, however, in much rarer and exceptional circumstances.

Vitamin B Mix

The consumption of too many B Vitamins can have some unwanted effects. Too much Vitamin B6 has been known to cause clumsiness and numbness of the hands and feet although this is only when it is consumed in very high doses. Vitamin B12 has mostly been linked to symptoms which are the result of an allergic reaction. These include skin rash, difficulty breathing and swelling of the lips or face. But quite a few side effects have been associated with the long term use of Vitamin B3 in high doses. These include all of those mentioned previously and dizziness, fever, aches/cramps, sickness, fatigue and irregular heartbeat. The amounts included in Bootea Shakes, however, are unlikely to cause these effects.

Green Tea Extract

Also known to be a stimulant, the side effects most often associated with Green Tea are much the same as those mentioned above for Guarana.

How To Use

Woman With Pills 538
One of the good things about this product is that the manufacturers are fairly flexible regarding the instructions on when users must take the shakes. This means that it will be easy to fit into most users’ daily routines. Although there is no specific time set for when the shakes should be consumed, it is stated that they should be taken in between meals. Although not specifically stated, this would imply that the shakes could be used up to 3 times per day. All users have to do is mix 1 sachet of the powder with 250ml to create the fruit tasting drink. It is also recommended by the manufacturers that while consuming the product, users drink 1-3 glasses of water before all meals. Due to the potential side effects of this product, if you are pregnant, diabetic, particularly sensitive to caffeine, or suffer from any oesophageal or heart defects, we would not recommended that you use Bootea Shakes.

Who Makes Bootea Shakes

As the name of the product suggests, Bootea Shakes are made by a company called Bootea. The website states that this a UK based company that specialises in 100% natural health supplements. It seems like it focuses on long term weight loss results as it emphasises that it will never promote ‘diets’ because healthy eating is a lifestyle and not a short term fix.

Where To Buy

where_to_buy_538
Unlike its sister products, Bootea Shakes does not appear to be available for purchase in any well-known high street retailers or on any other UK online retailers. It looks as though the only alternative site from which consumers can purchase the shakes is Amazon.com but this actually works out more expensive as it is US based and postage fees are relatively high. The only option then is to buy the shakes directly from the manufacturers for the price of £29.99 plus £3.99 for delivery. This gives you 14 servings so will last you anything from 5 days to 2 weeks depending on how often they are used. There is an option to save 10% and purchase the same amount for only £26.99 if you ‘subscribe and save’ which means that the product will be automatically shipped to you once per month and the corresponding payment will be taken. No money back guarantee is offered by the company.
