Forza Raspberry Ketone Review

Forza Raspberry Ketone is claimed to aid weight loss through inclusion of raspberry ketones and two other active ingredients, caffeine and resveratrol, claiming that the unique ‘2:2:1’ blend of ingredients allows each ingredient to work at its maximum efficiency. Created by fast-growing UK company Forza Supplements, the product has received mixed reviews and celebrity endorsements. Research into the key ingredient is still in very early stages.

Claimed weight loss benefits

Forza Supplements describe the product as a metabolism booster that also acts to suppress appetite, leading users to burn calories faster whilst eating less, leading to fast weight loss. They claim that raspberry ketones increase the production of adiponectin, a hormone secreted by fat cells that aids in fat breakdown, improves glucose absorption, and increases leptin production – a cell signalling molecule involved in regulating energy intake and hunger. They argue that caffeine helps fight feelings of fatigue associated with dieting, and encourages brain function, allowing users to feel alert whilst working. They claim that resveratrol has anti-ageing functions, along with helping prevent cancer, diabetes and heart disease.

How Forza Raspberry Ketone Works

The website for Forza Raspberry Ketone explains that raspberry ketones are enzymes derived from raspberries, and responsible for their aroma, which have thermogenic effects – ‘converting excess calories into heat, which is then released as thermal energy instead of stored as fat’. They allegedly ‘greatly improve metabolic rate’ so that the body burns more energy without having to exercise; they ‘also improve the production of certain enzymes associated with metabolism’, citing adiponectin to increase break down of body-fat and leptin to help suppress appetite. The 2:2:1 tagline in the product name is explained as the ratio of raspberry ketones to caffeine to resveratrol.

Forza Raspberry Ketone allegedly contains only ‘natural’ raspberry ketones, i.e. not synthesised in a lab, though no explanation of why this is better is given; the caffeine is described as a powerful energiser, increasing endurance and brain function, allowing the body to function whilst dieting. Resveratrol is marketed here as an ‘anti-ageing’ product, ‘found in red wine’, that allegedly helps strengthen the immune system, improve circulation, increase the body’s production of collagen to prevent wrinkles, and help prevent heart disease and cancer.

Raspberry Ketone

Raspberry ketones were made ‘famous’ by the ‘Dr Oz’ show in America; the show’s website states the same benefits as listed above, claiming increased norepinephrine and adiponectin levels. It also claims that raspberry ketones can boost the metabolism of ‘brown fat’, a specific adipose tissue. However, the references given by the website do not support these claims; at least four refer to capsaicin, which despite similarities, will not have the same effect as raspberry ketones, and only one of the references suggests that the ingredient can help with weight loss; adiponectin and norepinephrine are not even mentioned. Moreover, increasing the body’s levels of these hormones is not a permanent solution, as the levels will return to normal after the supplements are finished with.

Adiponectin is a protein involved in regulating glucose levels and the breakdown of fatty acids. It is secreted from the adipose tissue (fat cells) into the bloodstream to help modulate glucose levels. There has been a strong inverse correlation demonstrated between adiponectin and obesity, i.e. the more fat people have, the less adiponectin people have; a similar link has been drawn between insulin resistance and low adiponectin, which can lead to obesity and diabetes in sufferers.

Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant that might increase muscular endurance and strength, reduce mental fatigue and increase alertness, as well as suppressing appetite. Moreover, it is said to increase the body’s use of fatty acids over carbohydrate, causing more fat to be burnt and slowing down the release of energy, which allows for longer workouts at a more even pace. However, caffeine is also addictive; though the level of effect varies between consumers based on lifestyle, metabolism and exposure, high intake of caffeine in users who are unused to it can lead to severe psychological problems like depression and even paranoia when they stop taking it. High concentrations of caffeine in a single serving can also lead to jitteriness, inability to concentrate, elevated blood pressure and even nausea or headaches, in users unused to caffeine.

This is a polyphenol (organic compound) found in the skin of red grapes, and is the main cause of the health benefits of wine. It has been said to increase insulin sensitivity and heart health, and so has been cited as a source of longer life; it has also been suggested to have minor beneficial effects on metabolic rate, liver health, and blood glucose concentration. However, it might also inhibit the positive effects of intense exercise in healthy individuals, and may prevent muscle protein synthesis. Resveratrol has been speculated to prevent stem cells from becoming adipocytes, improving bone and muscle health as well as decreasing fat mass.

Raspberry Ketone

Raspberry ketones are chemicals that are found naturally in red raspberries, as well as several other types of fruit. The ingredient is used primarily in herbal medicine for the treatment of obesity; the supposed weight loss effects of raspberry ketones are however yet to be proven in human subjects.

Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant that is found in drinks such as tea and coffee and has long been associated with weight loss. As a stimulant, caffeine should increase energy levels and might boost concentration. It has also been associated with an increase in energy expenditure in the past.

Resveratrol is a chemical that is naturally occurring in certain fruits, most notably red grapes. It is thought to have an array of health benefits, including helping to prevent the onset of certain conditions, such as cancer. Its association with weight loss has not been proven in scientific studies.

Clinical Studies

Clinical Researcher 538

Forza Supplements admit that there is currently little scientific evidence to support the effectiveness of their product, with no tests on all the ingredients together; they point out that raspberry ketones are relatively new diet supplements and so have had little research into them, and that anecdotal evidence suggests the product is effective. The three active ingredients of the product – raspberry ketones, caffeine, and resveratrol – have some studies on their effects and metabolism however, and are analysed below.

Raspberry Ketones

A 2010 study by Park found that raspberry ketone could increase the rate of lipolysis and fatty acid oxidation in 3T3-L1 adipocytes (a specific fat cell), and also increased production of adiponectin; however, the information available does not relate the concentration of raspberry ketone to number of cells used, so the amount of raspberry ketone needed to create these effects in humans is unknown. Another study by Morimoto tested the effects of high raspberry ketone diets on mice for an eleven week period; the study found that the mice, who were all fed a high-fat, obesity inducing diet, gained a lot less weight on the highest raspberry ketone diet, with increased levels of fat metabolism.

Additionally, some studies have found links between raspberry ketones and adiponectin production; a 2010 study in Planta Medica found that four days of exposure to 10 micrograms of raspberry ketone to a culture of fat-cell precursors dramatically increased their cellular and secreted levels of adiponectin, with controls revealing that this was due to the raspberry ketones alone. There are also studies that suggest raspberry ketones are ineffective however, and the dosages used in the studies above were much larger than those found in any supplement. Human trials are needed before a proper verdict can be reached.

A study in 2006 monitored the caffeine intake of healthy men and women from 1986-1998 and compared it to their weight change over this time. The results showed a distinct trend between high caffeine intake and weight maintenance or loss, though the study was imperfect due to difficulties tracking subjects. A similar study saw overweight individuals diet hard for 4 weeks, then undergo a 3 month maintenance phase taking either a caffeine supplement or a placebo. The caffeine supplement group again showed a smaller level of weight gain than the placebo group.

One study by Warren et al. also showed that caffeine was found to have a small benefit to muscular endurance and strength, showing an average of 75 increase in knee extensor strength and a very small increase in endurance over 27 cases. This implies caffeine supplements can help improve workouts to burn more calories.

However, long term high-caffeine diets have been shown to have negative effects, like depression and addiction; the short-term energy boost caffeine gives, followed by the crash afterwards, can lead to dependency. A 1981 paper on the psychological effects of caffeine summarised by stating that high caffeine intake could lead to ‘psychological symptoms which resemble anxiety and depressive neuroses’, could ‘affect sleeping habits generally resulting in insomnia and hyperactivity’, and may cause ‘symptoms of mental illness’.

A study from 2009 found that resveratrol could reduce the levels of lipogenesis and increase levels of lipolysis, in in vitro studies of fat cells. The cells were incubated for up to two hours with between 125 and 200 moles of resveratrol, after which it was found that lipogenesis, the production of fat, from glucose had been noticeably reduced; adipocytes incubated with resveratrol and epinephrine were found to have increased lipolysis (breakdown of fats) additionally. This was attributed to disturbed mitochondrial metabolism of glucose.

Another study from 2008 found that resveratrol could prevent the formation of adipocytes from stem cells; in maturing preadipocytes, 25-50 micromoles of resveratrol decreased lipid accumulation by between 47 and 93%. This was attributed to resveratrol reducing the expression of genes associated with differentiation into adipocytes. However, the concentrations used in these experiments are extremely high compared to the concentrations used in diet supplements, and are localised specifically; i.e. the resveratrol was applied directly to fat cells, whereas this might not happen in the human body. Further studies are required to properly determine the effectiveness of resveratrol.

Forza Raspberry Ketone Side Effects

Woman With Stomach Ache 538

Customer reviews of Forza Raspberry Ketone reveal that nausea, headaches and dizziness are not uncommon complaints, with users experiencing symptoms within a few hours of taking the recommended dosage. These symptoms varied from mild, in more satisfied customers, to extremely severe in disappointed users. A few reviewers reported feeling numb or even having problems breathing, though these were rare; bowel problems were also reported occasionally, and more frequent urination was also cited. Though not always viewed as a problem, the energy boost given by the product was viewed as too intense by some customers, with some reporting an inability to focus or sit still.

Forza Raspberry Ketone’s ‘safety warning’ advises users not to take high-caffeine medications, foods or beverages whilst taking the product, as ‘too much caffeine may cause nervousness, irritability, sleeplessness, and, occasionally, rapid heartbeat’; they also acknowledge that sleeplessness or nausea are possibilities. Otherwise, they state no side effects, though they warn against sufferers of high-blood pressure or cardiovascular disorders from taking Forza Raspberry Ketone. All of these side effects can be traced back to caffeine, which, as a stimulant, increases heart rate and increases the activity of ‘wake-up’ neurons, which increases the rate of blood flow and creates feelings of restlessness/need for activity. The headaches created by caffeine can occur after immediate, concentrated use or due to withdrawal from long-term use.

Common symptoms of an overdose of caffeine include bowel issues, dizziness, fast heartbeat, hyper glycaemia, and vomiting; all of these symptoms have been reported, suggesting a lot of users are unable to tolerate the high caffeine intake. Caffeine also has serious psychological side-effects, including insomnia, and addiction followed by depression from withdrawal. To avoid becoming dependent on caffeine, users are recommended not to use Forza Raspberry Ketone for longer than several months at a time, and to avoid other sources of caffeine whilst using the supplement.

Raspberry Ketones

Raspberry ketones have had very few human studies, and as such there is limited understanding of their molecular mechanisms, and so their potential side-effects. In rats, dosages of up to 100 milligrams/kilogram of bodyweight have been shown to be safe, which is far larger than is present in any supplement. Experts have suggested that decreasing blood sugar levels may lead to heart palpitations and shakiness, though the severity of this effect is debateable. WebMD highlights a potential similarity between raspberry ketones and synephrine – a chemical that have been associated with severe side effects such as high blood pressure and heart palpitations which might increase the risk of heart attack and stroke. It is implied that these side effects might occur as a result of taking raspberry ketone, but these effects are yet to be reported for the ingredient.

Resveratrol similarly has had few human trials, though its molecular mechanisms are better understood and are not believed to be dangerous. The substance is thought to be likely safe for consumption by humans in the short term (up to three months). It is not recommended for people with hormone-sensitive conditions, including certain cancers.

How to Use

Forza instruct users to ‘begin by taking 1 capsule a day for seven days…increase dosage to 2 capsules in the morning and 1 capsule in the afternoon if required.’ This is likely due to the high caffeine content, which some users may find too concentrated and may experience negative side-effects. Forza warn against taking the supplement after 3PM if users have sleeping issues, and not to exceed four capsules a day.

Forza recommend dieting and leading an active lifestyle whilst the product. Forza warn against sufferers of heart problems, high blood pressure or hyperthyroidism from taking FRK, along with under 18’s or pregnant women; this is standard advice for diet supplements as it is uncertain how the drugs will act in conjunction with any medication the user may be taking. Consult a doctor before taking the supplement if you have a health condition or are on any medication.
