Litramine™ Side Effects & Clinical Studies
This article examines how Litramine™ works, the possible side effects and whether it is an effective ingredient for aiding weight loss.
What is Litramine?
When choosing a diet pill, the ingredients can seem confusing, especially as they often have technical sounding names, and some lack information on their origin. One ingredient that has been appearing in various diet pills over the past few years is Litramine, including XLS Medical. Here we will take a look at what exactly Litramine is, and whether it may be able to help you lose weight.
Natural Fat Binder
Litramine™ is derived from the dried leaves of the prickly pear cactus, also known as Opuntia Ficus Indica. Supposedly this has traditionally been used in Mexico as a weight loss aid for generations, at least according to the promotional material for some of the diet pills that use this key ingredient. As explored in more detail below, Litramine™ works by providing two different types of fibre, soluble and insoluble, which affect the body in two different ways. By combining the effects of both types, weight loss is caused in a number of ways, and is likely more effective than if weight loss was only addressed in one manner.
Litramine’s main process of working is by binding to fat in the stomach to prevent some dietary fat from being processed by the body. Fat binders in general are popular ways to help to manage weight, as they essentially reduce the number of calories processed out of the food you eat.
Litramine™ primarily works by providing additional insoluble fibre that binds with dietary fat in the stomach. This fat-fibre complex is too large to pass through the walls of the small intestine, and so the altered fat passes through the body without being absorbed. This means that fewer calories are taken into the body, which, when combined with a healthy balanced diet and exercise, leads to a calorie deficit, and weight loss. Clinical trials have produced the statistic that up to 27% of dietary fat can be bound and removed from the body in this way.
Litramine™ also provides additional soluble fibre into the user’s diet, which, unlike insoluble fibre, is absorbed into the system. Soluble fibre in the diet can help to lower blood cholesterol levels, which can help cardio-vascular health.
When the soluble fibre from Litramine™ reaches the stomach, it swells to form a “stable fluid gel”. This gel reportedly slows down digestion by slowing the rate that partially digested food can leave the stomach. This reportedly lessens hunger cravings between meals, and reduces appetite, both of which should cause a reduction in snacking.
By slowing down digestion, Liposinol also claims to help to counteract sudden drops in sugar levels that cause crashes in energy and cravings for snack foods. This suppression in appetite and the resultant reduction in over-eating should then cause further weight loss. These two effects of Litramine™ should also make it easier for users of these diet pills to stay on calorie restricted diets, due to the lessened cravings and reduced levels of hunger.
Litramine™ Clinical trials
According to clinical trials, it is claimed that Litramine is able to bind up to 27% of dietary fats consumed in a meal, which prevents a number of consumed calories from being absorbed into the body. As these statistics are based on clinical trials that are performed using very specific circumstances, these claims should be viewed as the optimal performance, which is somewhat difficult to reproduce in day to day circumstances.
Furthermore, the figure of 27% may sound impressive, but without reading the clinical trials in great detail it actually holds little meaning with no wider context. In the trial that the statistic came from, overweight participants were on strict diet and exercise regimes, with a controlled number of calories originating from fat. Most likely the trial was set up in order to manipulate the best sounding statistics from the information gathered. How much of a difference 27% of dietary fat makes to weight loss is open to debate, as each person’s individual diet, exercise regime, starting weight, fat and calorie intake and metabolic rate all differ, and so play a role in weight loss.
However, looking at the statistics put forward on Litramine.com, the provided charts clearly show that compared to a placebo, the use of Litramine™ does produce greater end results in terms of weight lost, change to BMI, and number of inches lost from the waist measurement. This does support the claim that “Litramine™ reduced significantly body weight than dieting and exercise alone”. However, this should not mean that the use of Litramine™ based products should be used in place of a controlled diet and exercise regime. The most prominent results will always be achieved when combining the three elements of diet, exercise and an effective and safe slimming pill or supplement.
More information about the clinical trials conducted involving Litramine™ can be read here.
Litramine™ Side effects
Litramine™ claims that it is gentle on the system and doesn’t interfere with the body’s natural workings, and yet there are reported side effects from the use of diet pills that use it as the key ingredient. These side effects include bloating, diarrhoea, constipation, headaches and even sickness. It is recommended that to reduce the occurrence of some of these side effects, especially headache and constipation, plenty of liquids are drunk as a part of a diet regime. To avoid diarrhoea and loose or oily stools, both common complaints with the use of fat binders, it is recommended that meals that are high in fat are avoided or eaten only in moderation. Drug or Medical Device?
Litramine™ is registered and marketed as a Medical Device Product, as it supposedly does not alter or interfere with the workings of the body in any metabolic, pharmacological or immunological manner. This means that it is classed as neither a drug nor a medicine, which infers its safety in terms of interaction with the body and a lack of serious side effects. Certainly, the side effects reported above are only minor when compared with the potential side effects of chemical based diet pills such as Orlistat, which can be long term and serious.
The advertising for products containing Litramine™ is high profile at the moment, with XLS Medical using both TV and internet adverts. However, a high profile marketing campaign and a few statistics that sound good without wider context does not necessarily mean that the product itself is good. Litramine has been associated with side effects that are unpleasant, and consumer reviews of the diet pills that use it as a key ingredient show a generally unsatisfied customer base. These customers either achieve less weight loss than expected or none at all, with only around 20% of users being completely satisfied with the product and its performance. The product is most certainly not a magic bullet, and acts to improve on results gained with exercise and dieting. As Litramine™ combines two methods that contribute to weight loss, appetite suppression and fat binding, it may be more successful than other ingredients that only address one of these methods. Before making a decision about whether to incorporate a product containing Litramine into your weight loss plan, alternatives should also be researched.
