NY Slim Review
NY Slim is described as a metabolism booster with fat binding qualities that aids quick and dramatic weight loss. It incorporates natural ingredients such as cactus extract and is said to carry no side effects. The company website claims that NY Slim has over 870,000 happy customers in the USA who have lost a dramatic amount of weight thanks to the product’s qualities. Evidence to support the drastic claims on the website is however not provided, and contrary to claims on the product website, the ingredients in the product are associated with some side effects.
Claimed weight loss benefits
NY Slim is claimed by the manufacturers to act as a fat binder and metabolism booster. It is therefore said to target two of the five key areas of weight loss.
How NY Slim Works
The active ingredient in NY Slim is called Opuntia ficus-indica – a species of cactus commonly found in Mexico and the Central American region. It has been used extensively by native Mexicans as a treatment for diabetes and more recently it has been utilised by pharmaceutical groups as a weight loss supplement. According to the manufacturers website, NY Slim offers fat burning qualities as well as being a metabolism booster. Explanations for the link between Opuntia ficus-indica and weight loss in humans are few and far between; there is little information about its ability to boost metabolism but there are some theories on its potential fat binding properties.
The theory is that chemicals within the cactus plant have lipophilic properties that result in a hydrophobic reaction within your digestive system. Substances that are lipophilic are attracted to fatty substances, and those tend to be repellent towards water (hydrophobic) – if you put a fatty substance in water they remain separate. Chemicals from the cactus supposedly bind to some of the fat preventing it from being absorbed through your digestive tract. If it is not absorbed it cannot be stored or used; if less fat is taken in from your diet your body will use the fat you already have instead – it is this change that supposedly causes you to lose weight.
NY Slim uses the natural cactus extract Opuntia Ficus-indica, which supposedly binds fats and insoluble fibres in the stomach, leaving the body unable to absorb them. The body is then forced to pass the fat straight through the digestive system – it is not stored within the body as it usually would be. Users should begin to lose weight because it is believed that by preventing this fat from being used by the body, NY Slim increases the amount of ‘resident’ fat being used – meaning a decrease in the body’s fat stores and subsequently loss in weight. However, although this theory could result in weight loss, there have been no clinical studies to show any concrete evidence of Oputia Fictus-indica’s fat binding powers.
It has been suggested that this cactus extract can reduce the level of oxidation of the LDL cholesterol in the bloodstream and could potentially lower your risk of an obesity related heart problem, though this is yet to be proven clinically in humans.
Key NY Slim Ingredients
The product’s website does not detail the full list of ingredients that make up NY Slim. However, it does explain the use of its key ingredient Opuntia Ficus-indica,
Opuntia Ficus-indica is a type of cactus commonly known as the prickly pear, which has been used for years in South America in traditional medicine. It is believed that Opuntia Ficus-indica’s fibre absorbs some of the fatty acids in the stomach, binding the fat so that rather than being stored, it travels through the body’s digestive tract. The young plants are also eaten as food in some diets, particularly in Mexico.
Clinical trials are carried out on humans under strict controls to thoroughly assess a medication for benefits and side effects. A randomised controlled trial is the gold standard for clinical trials. There is some evidence from in vitro (lab based), and animal studies showing the potential benefits of Opuntia ficus-indica. Unfortunately there is only one randomised controlled trial on humans looking into its weight loss qualities and this study was not carried out on NY Slim; it was carried out on the active ingredient within NY Slim so be cautious when interpreting the results.
Opuntia Ficus-indica Study
A study was carried out by a research team in 2013 led by Barbara Grube. They looked at what happened to patients with a BMI between 25-35 when half of them took medication containing this active ingredient and the other half took a medication without an active ingredient, a placebo. Your BMI is a measure of your weight relative to your height and age. To calculate your BMI visit the NHS BMI Calculator.
The 2013 study was strictly controlled and highlighted some interesting points. Whilst the trial was carried out all of the participants were put on a diet plan and carried out 30 minutes of exercise a day – before any medication was taken patients on average lost 1.6% of their total body weight. In those patients who took the medication containing Opuntia ficus-indica there was an average weight loss of 4.8%, which equated to 3.9kg. In those taking the placebo medication there was an average weight loss of 1.8%. Their calculations suggest that this ingredient reduces fat absorption by 27%. There were no side effects reported from any of the participants.
Although this study does suggest that this ingredient could be used as a supplement to help weight loss there are some flaws in this study. Firstly the length of the study was only 12 weeks – it tells us nothing about the sustainability of the weight that was lost. As well as this, the study did not adequately assess the impact of Opuntia ficus-indica on your risk of obesity related disease. An important point to note is that these results are all averages. If you look at Grube’s data more thoroughly you will see that the supplement was most effective on those with the highest BMI.
NY Slim Side Effects
It is clearly stated on the product’s website that there are no known side effects of NY Slim; it also claims that it has clinical evidence to support this. However, none of this evidence is published on the website and so it is unclear whether it actually exists. There have been reports of side effects from its key ingredient Opuntia Ficus-indica, although rare, such as diarrhoea, nausea, bloating and headaches, which you should be aware of before beginning this supplement. As there is no evidence that the product itself has been clinically tested, its safety cannot be confirmed neither can the claim that it carries no side effects.
Advertised as a fat binder that prevents the absorption of fat from the digestive tract, as a result this product might leaves a larger amount of fat than normal within the digestive tract. Reports from previous therapies that use this mechanism have shown that there are some common side effects; namely faecal incontinence, flatulence, oily stools and liver complications. Due to the nature of Opuntia ficus-indica it is less likely to result in these side effects however there have been some reports of diarrhoea, nausea, bloating and headaches.
How to Use
The manufacturers of NY Slim offer some guidance on their website on the best way to use their product. They state that nobody with less than 10lbs to lose should take NY Slim. They also claim that you can continue to eat your normal diet and lose weight with their supplement. Their final claim is that you do not need to increase your level of exercise whilst using their product.
No matter what diet pill you’re taking, no matter the claims that are made, maintaining a healthy, balanced diet and exercising well is the best way to lose weight and stay healthy. Diet pills might give you a boost along the way but no supplement has been proven to cause significant weight loss in a person without the addition of a healthy diet and exercise plan. If you chose to take NY Slim be sure to speak to your GP first to check that it is safe to do so and seek advice on your diet and exercise plans.
Who Makes It?
After extensive research we still have no answer as to who makes this product.
The company behind NY Slim has a single website for the product with very limited information on itself or those who make the product.
