Raspberry Ketone Lean Review
Distributors of Raspberry Ketone Lean claim that the product is a health improving, potent fat burner, which is able to increase the body’s metabolic rate and result in great weight loss. Evidence in support of these claims is however largely lacking.
Claimed weight loss benefits
The product and its ingredients are advertised as appetite suppressants, metabolism boosters and fat burners.
How Raspberry Ketone Lean Works
Using a range of natural ingredients, Raspberry Ketone Lean supposedly works to increase the body’s metabolic rate, burn stores of fat to provide energy, suppress appetite to prevent overeating and give the body a boost in energy thanks to its stimulant qualities so that users can exercise for longer.
Raspberries contain chemicals that give the fruit its distinctive flavour and one of these is raspberry ketone. When consumed in relatively high doses, it is thought that raspberry ketone can increase the production of adiponectin inside the body. Adiponectine is thought to be able to enhance muscles’ ability to use carbohydrates for energy as well as banish your appetite. Raspberry ketone is believed to be able to improve obesity by increasing the rate in which the body breaks down stores of fat and altering fat metabolism.
African mango, or irvingia gabonensis as it is also known, has been praised for its supposed ability to reduce body fat, which is thought to be thanks to its seeds. It is also believed to lower cholesterol and leptin levels in the body and because of this, it is thought that the substance is also able to reduce food cravings and encourage you to eat less.
The acai berry is said to work as an appetite suppressant, however there is little evidence to support this claim. Furthermore, it is thought that the substance is able to speed up the body’s metabolism but again this theory is so far unproven. The berry contains a large number of powerful antioxidants, which might promote general wellbeing while also helping to prevent disease and cancer.
Green Tea Extract
There is a substance called triglyceride, which is produced by the body in the intestines and liver from the consumption of fats and sugars. When too much of this substance is produced, the body stores it as fat and this can result in becoming overweight. Green tea is said to be able to reduce the build up of triglyceride thanks to the high number of polyphenols it contains. These polyphenols are purportedly able to activate a certain enzyme in the body and dissolve the excess triglyceride, ultimately reducing the amount of fat in the body. Green tea is also thought to speed up metabolism due to the antioxidants it contains. EGCG is one of these antioxidants and it is said to stimulate the central nervous system and release fat into the blood stream meaning that it can be burned to provide the body with energy.

As a stimulant, caffeine is able to provide the body with energy and allow you to exercise for a longer period of time, thus burn a larger amount of fat. It is believed that caffeine is able to start the process of lipolysis where the fatty acids are released by the body into the blood stream where they become available for cellular uptake. The substance is also thought to be able to stimulate the central nervous system, sending direct signals to fat cells meaning that they are then broken down and released into the blood while there is an increase in the body’s metabolism.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is thought to lead to gradual weight loss when taken on its own, however clinical testing has not provided strong support for this idea. The acids found in the substance supposedly help with the digestion of protein which helps to release hormones that are instrumental in breaking down fat cells. Therefore consuming apple cider vinegar may increase the availability of protein for hormone synthesis.
Key Raspberry Ketone Lean Ingredients
When ingested in high amounts it is believed that raspberry ketone is able to increase the production of adiponectin in the body. Adiponectin is thought to curb your appetite and enhance the muscles’ ability to use carbohydrates for energy. Raspberry ketone is also thought to increase the amount of fat that is broken down by the body.

Also known as irvingia gabonensis, African mango is sometimes claimed to reduce body fat, lower cholesterol and leptin levels while also reducing food cravings, meaning that you might be less likely to overeat. This berry is thought to work as an appetite suppressant and increase the body’s metabolic rate but there has been no clinical testing to support these ideas. However, the berry contains many antioxidants that may prove beneficial to your general health.
Caffeine is a stimulant and so provides the body with extra energy to allow for more exercise and, potentially, fat burning. It is thought that the substance is also able to trigger lipolysis meaning that fatty acids are released into the blood stream where they become available for cellular uptake. The substance can also increase metabolism and send signals to the fat cells so that they are broken down. For more information, we recommend you read our Caffeine – Weight Loss Benefits and Side Effects article.
Green Tea Extract
Green tea is said to prevent the build up of fat stores by releasing enzymes to dissolve excess triglyceride – the substance produced when you consume fat and sugar. The substance is also believed to speed up the metabolism thanks to the potent antioxidants that it contains. One of these antioxidants, EGCG might able to stimulate the central nervous system, causing fat to be released into the blood stream where it can be burned to provide energy.
Clinical studies are carried out to test the safety and efficiency of a health supplement. As the supplement market is so unregulated, these tests are particularly important. There is no mention of any clinical studies involving Raspberry Ketone Lean on the Maritz Mayer Laboratories website and so we can assume that there has been no testing on the product. There has, however, been testing on some of its key ingredients.
Unfortunately, there have not been any clinical studies into the safety or effectiveness of raspberry ketone in humans. However there has been testing on how the substance works in rodents and test tubes of fat, which provides us with some idea of how it might affect humans.
Test tube experiments suggest that raspberry ketone is able to promote the breakdown of fat indirectly by stimulating the increased production of the protein known as adiponectin, however the amount of raspberry ketone used in these experiments are thought to be unsafe for human consumption.
In one study, mice were given a diet that was high in fat for 6 weeks. They were then given a high fat diet containing 1% raspberry ketone for the next 5 weeks. The results concluded that raspberry ketone was able to prevent the high fat induced elevations in body weight while also increasing lipolysis meaning that stores of fat started to burn.
In a 10 week, randomised, double blind and placebo controlled study, 102 overweight subjects were given either 150mg of African mango seed extract or a placebo 30 minutes before lunch and dinner. Those receiving the African mango improved both weight reduction and metabolic parameters (cholesterol, blood glucose, adiponectin and leptin levels).
In another randomised, double blind, placebo controlled study that lasted for one month, 40 overweight patients were given African mango. Each patient was given 3 capsules containing 350mg of African mango or a placebo 3 times each day 30 minutes before meals with a glass of warm water. They were evaluated each week and were instructed to keep a record of the food they had consumed. In conclusion, those who had taken the African mango had reduced body weight, waist and hip circumference and metabolic parameters.
Green Tea Extract
In one study conducted in Thailand in 2008, 60 obese subjects were given a Thai diet containing 3 meals for 12 weeks, while taking either green tea or a placebo. Body weight, BMI, body composition, resting energy expenditure and substrate oxidation was measured at the start and during weeks 4,8 and 12 of the study. The results of the study concluded that green tea is able to reduce body weight by increasing energy expenditure and fat oxidation.
Raspberry Ketone Lean Side Effects
There is no mention of any side effects to Raspberry Ketone Lean on the product’s webpage, however this does not mean that users will not experience any effects. In fact, many of the ingredients used within the supplement are known to carry side effects that can sometimes prove to be unpleasant. These effects include headaches, nausea, vomiting, nervousness, irritability, increased heart rate and blood pressure, rapid heartbeat, dizziness and sleep problems.
Some of the ingredients are also thought to worsen certain medical conditions such as bleeding disorders, liver problems, irritable bowel syndrome, anaemia, anxiety, high blood pressure, diabetes, heart conditions and glaucoma and so anyone who suffers from any of these conditions is advised not to use the supplement. Nor are pregnant or breastfeeding women and this is stated on the Maritz Mayer Laboratories website.
It is not known whether it is safe to take raspberry ketone in large doses at this stage as it has not been clinically assessed. Raspberry ketone is chemically similar to another substance named synephrine, which is known to carry some unpleasant side effects such as jitteriness, increased blood pressure and rapid heartbeat and as these two substances are similar it may be that raspberry ketone has similar effects. There have been many first hand customer reviews published online where users report a range of side effects from feeling lightheaded, fatigue and energy loss, nausea, abdominal cramps, increased bowel movements, vomiting and sleeping issues, with many users stating that they had to discontinue taking the supplement.
African mango is believed to be safe to use in adults for up to 4 weeks, with the only side effects being reported as flatulence, headaches and sleep problems. Not enough is known about the substance to deem it safe for pregnant or breast feeding women to use and so they are advised to avoid using it.
Taking a large amount of acai berries can lead to diarrhoea, liver problems, high blood pressure and an increase in bleeding. Therefore those who suffer from bleeding disorders or high blood pressure should not take this substance.
Green Tea Extract
Green tea is considered to be safe when taken in small amounts for short term use in adults, however taking too much green tea is possibly unsafe and can result in various uncomfortable side effects such as headache, nervousness, sleep problems, irritability, heartburn, dizziness and confusions. Pregnant and breast feeding women are advised to drink no more than 2 cups of green tea per day as consuming more than this amount has been linked to negative effects. Those who suffer from medical conditions such as anaemia, anxiety, bleeding disorders, diabetes, heart conditions, irritable bowel syndrome, high blood pressure or liver disease should not take this substance as it may worsen their conditions.
While large doses of caffeine are known to be unsafe, smaller doses can still cause health issues. The substance can bring about headaches, restlessness, stomach irritation, increased heartbeat and respiration and chest pains and can worsen medical conditions such as anxiety, bipolar, heart conditions, irritable bowel syndrome, high blood pressure and glaucoma. It is also considered unsafe to consume while pregnant as it may harm the foetus.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar should not be used for long-term treatment as it may lead to issues like low potassium and weak bones, or osteoporosis. Not enough is known about the substance to deem it safe for pregnant women to use and so they are advised not to use it. Apple cider vinegar may lower blood sugar levels in people with diabetes and so their blood sugar levels should be monitored closely while taking the substance.
How to Use
While the Raspberry Ketone Lean webpage offers a list of the ingredients within the supplement, there are no amounts given. Because of this, there is no way to know whether the amounts are safe to consume. The website states that users should take 2 capsules each day, but does not specify when to take the capsules, how long to leave in between taking them or whether to take them before meals or with liquids. Looking at similar products we can assume that users should take one capsule in the morning and one capsule in the evening with a liquid. However it is very important that supplements come with clear instructions to prevent potential overdosing and to ensure that users get the maximum effect from the supplement.
The excluded groups of people who should not take the supplement include those with high blood pressure, anxiety, heart conditions, bleeding disorders, diabetes and bleeding disorders. These are not outlined although those with pre-existing medical conditions are advised to speak with their doctor before using the supplement.
Who Makes It?
The company behind Raspberry Ketone Lean is Maritz Mayer Laboratories, a company based in Atlanta, Georgia, who claim to formulate and manufacture ‘top of the line nutraceutical products’ that are dependable. They manufacture and sell a range of health supplements with an extensive list of these products available to view on their website. However rather than being displayed on the website, the price of each product is given on application.
There is no information available on the history of the company or about the founders behind it, but the company website provides a physical address for its headquarters in Atlanta as well as a toll free, 9am-6pm EST phone number, Skype contact and a customer service email address meaning that customers can speak to a team member and request such information if they wish.
Where to Buy Raspberry Ketone Lean
Raspberry Ketone Lean is not available to purchase on the UK high street, however it is available to purchase from the company website and from other online retailers such as Amazon.
