Troxyphen Review

Troxyphen is produced by the nutraceutical and cosmetic company, TruDERMA. The product is designed with the aim of helping men over the age of 25 burn fat and increase muscle mass as well as elevate libido. It has been said in magazines such as Men’s Health, that the product is particularly popular with celebrities, making it fly into the public’s view in the last 2 years. However, there have been claims that Troxyphen can cause sleeplessness if taken less than 4 hours before sleep and that it may not work to its full effect unless used alongside regular exercise.

Troxyphen Claimed weight loss benefits

Troxyphen is made up of two supplement blends, one which boosts testosterone levels in the body and the other targeting thermogenics. The thermogenic blend particularly aids in weight loss because it contains Yohimbe HCL, which blocks fat storing receptors in the body, and Synephrine caprylate (or bitter orange), which acts as an appetite suppressant.

How Troxyphen Works

After a capsule is consumed, it enters the bloodstream quickly as a result of the delivery agent BioPerine, and releases its active ingredients into the body. The product maintains a balance between naturally boosting testosterone levels and increasing thermogenic burn, but this has to be aided by ‘moderate weight training and cardio on-off days’ (Troxyphen) to achieve its full effect. Some studies have elaborated on this point by proving that the body burns fat quicker after exercise because the metabolism rate is increased. Troxyphen maximises the results during this high metabolic state to burn the excess fat that remains pocketed around the body. The high levels of caffeine also increase the rate of thermogenic fat burning. However, these high levels of caffeine could interfere with sleep and cause jitteriness in some men who take the supplement.

The main active ingredient in the Troxyphen supplement is Testofen, which is part of the Testosterone Boosting Blend within the capsule. Testofen is a form of fenugreek which claims to increase muscle mass and increase energy levels. There is no scientific evidence to support these claims but fenugreek has been used in medicine for centuries so may have some significance.

Another ingredient included in the part of the supplement that targets testosterone boosting is L-Arginine. This is an amino acid that can be found in some foods and claims to aid in the production of creatine within the body. Creatine provides energy to the muscles, increasing their ability to work harder and increase in mass. L-Arginine works by widening the blood vessels in the body to improve blood flow whilst also stimulating hormones such as growth hormones and insulin.

Tribulus Terrestris
Tribulus Terrestris, a flowering plant found in a variety of tropical regions, is used in the Testosterone Boosting Blend of Troxyphen to raise base line testosterone levels. The plant extract is often claimed to increase lean muscle mass when taken over the course of a month. This ingredient is marketed primarily as a testosterone booster, yet no scientific evidence has arisen during clinical studies to support the effects of the herb on testosterone levels in men. For more information on clinical studies on Tribulus Terrestris, see the below section entitled ‘clinical studies’.

Potency Wood Extract
Potency Wood Extract (Muira Puama Leaf Extract) is used in Troxyphen as an aphrodisiac to increase sexual desire and performance in men. There is no scientific evidence to support the effects of Muira Puama, but it is an ancient tradition, particularly in Brazil, that claims to have successful effects on men with sexual disorders. In its natural form, it is often applied directly to the skin, but is taken orally in Troxyphen to help men’s sexual performance and endurance levels. There is no evidence of potency wood having any effect on weight loss and the manufacturer only market the ingredient as a sexual stimulant.

Saw Palmetto
Saw Palmetto is a plant that bears fruit used in medicine. It is primarily used in the supplement to treat enlarged prostate and there have been multiple clinical trials which support its effectiveness for this purpose. This ingredient also claims to ensure overall sexual health in men. Such clinical studies are outlines in the below section.

The other half of the Troxyphen supplement is the Thermogenic Shred Blend consisting of 223 mg. This blend primarily contains caffeine, which is used as a stimulant to boost energy and aid thermogenic burn alongside regular exercise. It works by stimulating the central nervous system, but has a negative effect on those who don’t take caffeine regularly, such as raising blood pressure and causing an increase in water flow in the body. However, it has been clinically proven that caffeine is an effective stimulant and it acts as an effective energy booster in the Troxyphen supplement. For more about caffeine, read our Caffeine article.

Synephrine Caprylate (bitter orange)
Synephrine Caprylate, or bitter orange, is used in Troxyphen as an appetite suppressant. It is often used in products as a replacement for ephedra, which was taken off the market in 2004 because of its serious side effects. However, no evidence suggests that synephrine is safer than ephedra and it can counteract some other forms of medication. Bitter orange works by affecting the nervous system depending on which part of the plant is used. It can constrict blood vessels, increase heart rate and raise blood pressure, all to different effects, which in the case of Troxyphen is appetite suppression used for weight loss. See below for more information on side effects and clinical studies as well as our Bitter Orange article.

Yohimbe is an evergreen tree found in Cameroon, Zaire and Gabon and its bark contains a chemical called yohimbine which is used in medicine. Yohimbe is used in Troxyphen as a weight loss supplement and claims to work by increasing blood flow and energising receptors to deliver nerve impulses quicker. In Troxyphen, the yohimbe blocks the fat storing receptors (alpha 2) that pocket fat around the body, with the aim to help men lose extra weight that cannot be lost through exercise or diet alone.

Key Ingredients

Caffeine 538
Troxyphen uses a specific selection of ingredients that aim to target certain aspects of men’s health and lifestyle, such as weight loss, muscle gain and general energy and performance levels. To do this, the supplement has been created with two aims and with two groups of ingredients. One group focuses on increasing the base line testosterone levels in the blood, while the other targets weight loss and muscle mass increase through thermogenic stimulation. Together, these two ‘shred blends’, as they are named by the Troxyphen company, claim to improve a man’s overall energy and performance levels in day-to-day life.

This is the primary ingredient in Troxyphen which claims to significantly boost testosterone levels in the blood. The manufacturer uses this ingredient as their main selling point because the ingredient is highly magnified on all of their supplier’s website and product advertisements. Testofen is a form of fenugreek extract which is used in many other medicines and treatments but is relatively understudied.

The ‘L’ form of argenine is one of the most commonly found natural amino acids. It is produced naturally in the body so doesn’t ordinarily need to be administered orally through supplements except for providing extra energy to certain parts of the body, particularly muscles. Its main role is to increase hormone production in the body and increase bodily functions such as hormone production, however this normally occurs when it is administered intravenously. When taken orally, in Troxyphen, the effects claim to be primarily physical, such as muscle mass increase and energy boosting.

Tribulus Terrestris
Tribulus terrestris is a plant that grows in dry climate locations, but most invasively in North America. Its extract, used in medicine and supplements, is claimed to increase the body’s natural testosterone levels and therefore help with gaining muscle mass. It is used by many athletes because of its supposed strength enhancing properties, but this has not yet been proven in scientific studies of the extract. Generally, Tribulus terrestris is said to balance the nervous system and protect the cardiovascular system, both of which is important during strenuous exercise and periods of weight loss plans.

Potency Wood Extract (Muira Puama)
Muira puama is a plant indigenous to the Amazon rainforest. Its bark, or the potency wood extract, is the most common part of the plant that is used for medicinal purposes. This ingredient is used in Troxyphen because it is claimed to enhance sexual performance, although this theory is incredibly understudied and there is no scientific proof to support it. It is traditionally used by native Amazonians in herbalist treatments, particularly to treat illnesses connected with the central nervous system.

Saw Palmetto

Saw palmetto is a fruit extract rich in fatty acids. It is used in a variety of herbal treatments but most commonly to help with prostate problems. Troxyphen claims that by including saw palmetto in the product, it will help maintain a healthy prostate in men as well as keeping general sexual health in order.

This ingredient is used in thousands of products and is considered as a relatively safe and moderate form of stimulant. It is found in the leaves and seeds of a variety of plant forms all over the world. Humans gain their largest intake of caffeine from coffee and tea, but it is also used in a multitude of medications, including weight loss supplements such as Troxyphen. It stimulates the central nervous system which increases the rate nerve impulses all over the body. Caffeine normally takes effect one hour after consumption and the effects last for around 5 hours.

Synephrine Caprylate
Bitter orange (or synephrine caprylate) comes from a tree which is native to eastern Africa and parts of tropical Asia. The oil from the fruit is used in some foods as well as in certain medications as an appetite suppressant, including Troxyphen. It is used in many weight loss supplements as a replacement for ephedra, which was banned in 2004 because it was deemed unsafe for concentrated use. The main chemical in bitter orange is synephrine, which increases heart rate and energy within the body. There has been relatively little evidence to support its effects, but is deemed safe to use in small doses.

bitter orange peel in t5 fat burner

The yohimbe tree is found in western and central Africa. Parts of the tree are used in medicine, including the chemical which it produces called yohimbine. This chemical claims to increase blood flow around the body and stimulate nerves. It is widely available as an over-the-counter medication, as part of dietary and weight loss supplements and as an aphrodisiac. Yohimbe also contains other alkaloids that are used in Troxyphen to block fat storing receptors that pocket fat around the body and aid in weight loss.

Clinical Studies

Some of the ingredients used in Troxyphen have been studied as part of clinical trials undergone by researchers. These trials test the product’s effectiveness as treatments for a variety of issues, for example, Troxyphen claims that its ingredients tackle problems such as weight loss and low levels of testosterone. Not all of the active ingredients listed in the product have had significant scientific tests and so their degree of success cannot be concluded. However, ingredients such as Testofen have been the subject of multiple clinical studies and new evidence now supports its effectiveness for muscle gain and increase in sexual performance. For more information, see details below or follow the links.

An animal study of Testofen was undertaken in 2010 on the reproductive systems of rats. The study showed that the weight of the ani-levator muscle increased significantly with the use of Testofen, and led to the increase in body weight and muscle mass. This study gave researchers enough evidence to support the impact of Testophen upon muscle mass.
There have also been 2 main placebo-controlled human studies in 2006 and 2011, which both highlighted similar effects as those seen in the 2010 animal test. These studies also indicated an increase in sexual performance as well as muscle weight gain within the 60 adult male subjects.

Tribulus Terrestris
The effects of Tribulus terrestis were observed during a clinical study undergone in 2005. Researchers split a group of 21 healthy men, all aged between 20 and 36. Half the men were given a dose of 20mg per kg of body weight, whereas the second group were given only 10mg per kg of body weight. After four weeks of taking the supplement there seemed to be no discernable difference in testosterone levels between the the two groups of men. However, there may have been a vaster difference if one of the two groups were given a placebo instad of a halved dose.

Potency Wood Extract
In 1998, scientists tested potency wood extract, or Muira puama, to observe its ability to raise energy and help with weight loss. They gave the extract orally to a group of mice and found that their activity was reduced significantly only 1 hour after taking the supplement. Other clinical studies have found the extract useful for other treatments, but the effects of potency wood extract as a weight loss supplement are incredibly scarce.

Saw Palmetto
There have been a multitude of clinical trials to test the effect of saw palmetto including a 6 month, double-blind study in 1996, where over 1000 men saw a positive change in benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) as a result of the fruit extract. There have been over 20 clinical studies on saw palmetto over the past 25 years and many of them support the effectiveness of the saw palmetto extract.

Another study took place in 2006 where 226 men over the age of 50 with varying levels of BPH were divided into groups. Some were given an equal dose of saw palemetto to take over 3 months, while others were given the placebo drug. The symptoms of the men taking the saw palmetto improved over the course of the experiment, showing that the extract could take some effect on BPH. However, because saw palmetto is not marketed as a weight loss supplement, there is no research to suggest that it is effective as a weight loss device in Troxyphen.

In 1990, a study was undertaken to observe the thermogenic and metabolic effects of caffeine. Healthy volunteers were split into groups, some were given a variety of doses of caffeine and others a placebo pill. Their results showed an increase in heart rate in those that took the caffeine dose. The study also suggests that caffeine increases vascular smooth muscle tone and hormone production, which are responsible for the majority of the thermogenic effects caused by the caffeine.

Synephrine Caprylate (bitter orange)
Over 20 independent studies have been done to observe the effects of synephrine caprylate on over 360 subjects. 50% of all subject were overweight or obese, around two thirds of those who were overweight or obese were also taking caffeine alongside the synephrine caprylate drug. As a general result, those who took bitter orange alone or alongside other herbal treatments saw very few results over the course of 12 weeks. Those who took a complex treatment of bitter orange and another product containing multiple ingredients were shown to have an increased resting metabolic rate and also showed some weight loss effects. However, it was conluded that the research needed to be carried out over a longer period of time to use as evidence of the effects of synephrine caprylate for weight loss.

There is one major study that took place in 1991 to observe the effects of yohimbe as a weight loss supplement. The study was conducted as a trial for the yohimbine chemical that is a product of the yohimbe plant. This study took 2 groups of participants where one group were given 20mg of yohimbe and the second group recevied a placebo. The trial indicated that on average, the group that took the yohimbe lost 3 more pounds than the second group. However, this did not provide enough evidence for scientists to conclude that the results were concrete, but it was a result that offers hope that the substance can help with weight loss.

Weight Loss Power: 70/100

Almost all sources claim that Troxyphen is an effective weight loss product, including Men’s Health; however, Troxyphen claims that the results will differ depending on the individual and state that to reach the maximum effect of the supplement, moderate weight training and cardio must be carried out whilst taking Troxyphen.
Speed of results: 60/100

There is a lot of positive feedback from customers on supplier’s websites claiming that they saw results in under two weeks. The product seems to take effect quickly but may also cause some short-term side effects such as insomnia (see below). See customer comments on supplier websites (GNC, Amazon and EBay)
Appetite Suppression: 20/100

Although the product does contain synephrine caprylate (bitter orange), which is used as an appetite suppressant, there is very little to support its effectiveness. There have been claims that it can cause some side effects when taken as a medical supplement for weight loss but there has been no sufficient evidence to support any side effects when taken in small doses or in food. See below for more details about possible side effects.
Long Term Results: 20/100

After looking at customer satisfaction statistics on EBay of 99.5%, Troxyphen proves to be an effective product. However, there is no specific comments on long-term results and the product may have to be continued for the effects to be maintained over a long period of time. The Troxyphen FAQ website claims that most men will see results after 8 weeks.
Safety: 20/100

Even though the Troxyphen company claim that their product helps men to lose weight ‘naturally’, many of the active ingredients seem to be associated with negative side effects. These ingredients include Testofen, yohimbe, synephrine caprylate and caffeine. All of the suspected side effects for these ingredients can be found via the WebMD site or in the section labelled ‘side effects’ below.
Value for money: 50/100

A UK buyer could expect to pay between £25 and £40 for a 30 day supply of Troxyphen (60 capsules). This price seems to reflect the seemingly positive effects of the product, but is perhaps quite costly for only a month’s supply. Both Amazon and EBay give prices in GBP.

Troxyphen Side Effects

Woman With Stomach Ache 538
Of course all types of medication and supplements come with precautionary measures, but there are no significant or very serious side effects attributed to Troxyphen as an overall product. Some customers claim that the product has interfered with their sleep patterns, while others have said that the large amount of caffeine in the product can also cause jitteriness and irritability. However, many customers report no side effects at all, as seen in the customer reviews on the GNC website. Some of the active ingredients in the product are associated with some more serious side effects that could cause concern with some customers, but very few are scientifically supported by clinical trials.

As the main active ingredient in Troxyphen, Testofen has been largely considered safe by researchers when taken in normal amounts. However, there has been claims that fenugreek may cause gastric discomfort and diarrhoea, as well as coughing, facial swelling, allergic reactions and nasal congestion in more sensitive individuals who take large amounts of the supplement. Fenugreek may also take particular effect on diabetics because it is thought to slightly lower blood sugar levels. It is suggested that diabetics monitor their blood sugar regularly when taking Testofen or any product containing fenugreek extract. Generally, there have been no scientific studies to discern any serious side effects that Testofen may cause to any indiviidual taking Troxyphen as a dietary or weight loss supplement.

L-Arginine can be considered as one of the safest ingredients in Troxyphen when taken in the correct dosage. After a 3 month clinical trial, the amino acid was found to have very minimal side effects that occur infrequently. Possible side effects include abdominal pain, bloating and diarrhoea. When taken in large amounts it can also cause problems for people with asthma and those taking medication for blood pressure or erectile dysfunction. However, these side effects do not seem to occur often in users of Troxyphen.

Tribulus Terrestris

Tribululs terrestris, although a natural ingredient, can only be taken in the form of medication because eating the fruit in its natural form can be extremely harmful. There is a very limited amount of scientific evidence available; therefore the possible side effects are not supported by anything other than individual claims and a minimal amount of clinical research. The one possible side effect for men when taking Troxyphen is interference with sleep and the only other possible side effect can only affect women (which is unecessary because Troxyphen can only be taken by men).

Muira Puama

There has not been any clinical studies to determine the side effects of Muira puama extract or potency wood and there have been very few claims of side effects. The only medical advice given for this plant extract is to avoid it when pregnant or breastfeeding. Therefore the men using Troxyphen will probably be unaffected by this ingredient.

Saw Palmetto

Clinical trials have determined that saw palmetto is most likely safe to use by the majority of individuals. However, there have been cases of mild side effects such as dizziness, headaches and constipation, but these have not lasted over long periods of time when the extract has stopped being consumed. On a more serious level there have been 3 claims that saw palmetto can cause liver and pancreas problems, but the very small number of cases leaves this inconclusive and without any significant evidence to support it.

The caffeine based ingredients included in Troxyphen, such as green coffee bean extract, are fairly harmless when used in normal quantities. It is well known the caffeine can cause jiterriness and interupt with a good night’s sleep, but these are the only side effects strongly associated with this ingredient. There have been some cases of nausea and other more serious symptoms caused by caffeine, but largely, it is safe to use in standard amounts.

Synephrine Caprylate

Synephrine caprylate is one of the ingredients within Troxyphen which has a fairly long list of possible side effects. After becoming an alternative for ephedra, which was banned in 2004, there is little research that suggests that it is any better for you than ephedra was. Synephrine (or bitter orange) is considered safe when taken naturally as a part of food, but can cause problems when taken as an appetite suppressant in a weight loss supplement. Bitter orange contains chemicals that could have the abiliity to raise blood pressure and heart rate. There have been reports of heart attacks, stroke and fainting after taking bitter orange supplements or synephrine alongside caffeine. Professionals suggest that you tell your doctor before using any medication or supplement containing synephrine caprylate or to avoid it if you have any underlying health issues. Read this NIH fact sheet about synephrine caprylate for further information about side effects.

The final ingredient in Troxyphen that may cause some side effects is Yohimbe HCL. The chemical from this plant, yohimbine, is only considered safe to use over a short period of time and when supervised by a health professional. The chemical is used as a prescription drug in North America, but there has been claims of some serious side effects when taken in abnormal amounts or for long periods of time. Yohimbe, in its original form, is considered unsafe to take take orallly because it could cause an increase in heartbeat, kidney problems and seizure. Although these symptoms are rare, it is important to monitor the intake of yohimbe and tell your doctor about any other medication you may be taking.

How To Use

Woman With Pills 538
Troxyphen is a very simple product to use. An individual should take 1 tablet twice a day and not less than 4 hours before sleep, because this could interrupt a good night’s sleep. The manufacturer suggests taking the supplement alongside moderate weight training and cardio exercise for it to reach its full effect. They also suggest that if you are taking any other medication then you should consult your doctor before starting a course of Troxyphen in case it counteracts with the functions of any other types of medication, such as antidepressants. You should also consult your doctor if you have any other underlying health issues such as diabetes or high blood pressure

Who Makes Troxyphen

TruDERMA are a nutraceutical and cosmetic company based in Las Vegas, NV and are the manufacturers of the Troxyphen supplement. The compnay produces two other weight loss and dietary supplements, GastrobiPlex and Mangodrin which, according to customer reviews on Amazon, seem to be effective products that offer slightly different results to a variety of customers (both men and women). TruDERMA also offer a 100% money back guarentee to all their customers on all products if they are not happy with the results they have achieved. This, alongside the effects of the products themselves, makes customer complaints difficult to come across on supplier websites and keeps the reviews positive. TruDERMA offer a reputable service to their customers but they do tend to gloss over information about negative side effects of certain ingredients, keeping them to the small print on the product.

Where To Buy

Troxyphen can only be purchased online by a UK based buyer and is not available in highstreet stores in UK. Prices online do vary from around £25 to £40 pounds depending on where the product is shipped from and the cost of delivery. Troxyphen is available on EBay for around £28, which is the lowest price given in GBP. Another online supplier is Amazon which sells Troxyphen for the price of just over £35, but there are other suppliers that give their prices in American dollars, which may be cheaper than the two leading UK sites. It is also possible to purchase the product directly from the manafacturer because truDERMA have an online shop where all of their products can be found. GNC also sell the product, but again the prices are not given in GBP, so the prices will vary dependant upon exchange rates. As a UK buyer, it is best to order Troxyphen from a site that gives the cost in GBP so you know exactly how much you are spending.

Overall Verdict

In all, Troxyphen proves to be a product with good value for money. After looking at the price range and the overall satisfaction of customers the balance is fairly equal. The product is available to people in the UK, but it is only available online and may take some time to be shipped from the US to the UK. TruDERMA seem to be a reputable manufacturer who offer a money back guarentee if the customer is in any way unhappy with the results of the product, but again this may cause problems for a UK buyer to return the product to its manufacturer overseas. There is a shortage of clinical research to support the effectiveness of some ingredients and there have been claims of serious side effects from these ingredients, as detailed in the above section. However, most of these side effects occur after consuming the ingredient as part of other medications or by itself, not within the Troxyphen product. As an overview, the customer reviews for Troxyphen show a high level of customer satisfaction, however, some of the ingredients remain a little understudied and lack scientific support.
