USN CLA Green Tea Review

USN CLA Green Tea is a product centred on the thermogenic properties of green tea and is manufactured by a company that has a number of other health and bodybuilding supplements in its range. USN itself has supposedly sought out partnerships with top-level athletes and bodybuilders. This particular product is just one of a wide range of health and fitness orientated supplements that USN offers.

Claimed weight loss benefits

The official website states that the product should help users to lose weight and maintain general health. The key ingredients are believed to target weight loss through the processes of fat burning and metabolism boosting.

How USN CLA Green Tea Works

woman wondering how diet pill works 538

This product is thought to be thermogenic – offering an increase in the internal body temperature, which in turn is thought to improve fat burning and boost the metabolism. The quicker your metabolism is then the more energy is required to maintain it, thus more calories are burnt. The easiest way to increase your metabolic rate is to participate in exercise, although your metabolic rate will also increase if you are cold for example, or anxious. People who have more muscle mass also have a quicker metabolic rate then less muscular individuals because muscle requires more energy as muscles are constantly working in comparison to fat, which is purely a storage method.

Green Tea

Green tea is a very popular ingredient that is thought to be thermogenic and so can be found in many diet supplements. This is because it contains caffeine as well as chemicals known as catechins, such as epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which are believed to have beneficial effects for weight loss. It is thought that green tea is a thermogenic ingredient that can boost the metabolism.

Safflower Oil

Unlike green tea, this ingredient is not a common addition to diet products. Safflower oil has been linked to increasing the activity of an enzyme called lipoprotein lipase. A direct result of this increased enzyme is something called fat oxidation. In everyday life, some of the fat that you consume is stored as large molecules for either insulation or storage purposes. This commonly occurs because you are taking on surplus calories or have a high sugar diet which is easier for the body to break down although it provides energy less efficiently than burning fat would. Fat oxidation is a process in which the body targets more of these fat storage molecules than it usually would do and breaks them down in order to use them to produce energy. The end result of this process is that less fat is stored away and in the long run you may lose weight.

The third and final ingredient in this product is glycerol. This ingredient is often involved in laxative-based products as it is thought to have the ability to draw water from a range of bodily sources into the gut. This may cause stools to soften which in turn makes bowel movements a lot easier and a lot less painful.

Key USN CLA Green Tea Ingredients

The product contains three ingredients in total; these are green tea, safflower oil and glycerol. It seems that green tea is the key ingredient, which is reinforced by the name of the product.

Green Tea

A lot of people consume green tea on a regular basis. Green tea is made from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant originally grown in China, however rising popularity and demand for the plant has resulted in it being grown in many different countries. The variety of different climates that the plant is exposed to results in a number of different types of green tea each unique to a specific region. The first recorded mention of green tea has been dated as far back as 2723 BC for the purposes of general medical care and as a beverage. In the modern day, green tea is thought to have the ability to raise metabolic rate causing more calories to be burnt without needing to change your lifestyle.

Safflower Oil

Safflower oil is unsurprisingly made from the seeds of the safflower plant, which shares many things in common with the sunflower which also produces oil. In Ancient Egypt the tomb of Tutankhamun was found to be decorated with garlands made from safflowers and incidentally the safflower is also regarded as one of humanity’s earliest form of crops. In modern times the plant is largely grown in India, USA and Mexico. Its application in terms of weight loss is still not completely understood but it is thought to stimulate an enzyme that causes a greater percentage of fat to be used as an energy source. However, the link is at such an early stage that there would be no use in dedicating time to explaining exactly how this works as it would purely be speculation.

Clinical Studies

Clinical Researcher 538

USN CLA Green Tea contains a number of ingredients designed to help you lose weight, however these ingredients have no clinical trials to investigate how effective the product is when all the ingredients are combined together. We therefore have to rely on trials conducted on the ingredients in isolation to try and determine how effective the product is likely to be.

Green Tea

A study conducted by Plantenga in 2005 investigated the effects of green tea ingestion on weight loss and weight maintenance in obese individuals. In total, 76 participants were put onto a low calorie diet for four weeks and were then put onto a weight maintenance diet for the three months that followed. The participants were split into three separate groups; the first group would act as a placebo group, the second group would be a high caffeine group and the third group would be the green tea group. The results of the study suggested that the high caffeine group lost significantly more weight than the other two groups during the weight maintenance phase. However, the green tea group still lost more weight than the placebo group. This study indicates that while green tea may not be as effective as caffeine at prompting weight loss to occur it still does have a noticeable effect over not drinking green tea at all.

Safflower Oil

The next ingredient under investigation is Safflower Oil. A study conducted by Shimomura in 1990 investigated the effects of Safflower Oil on weight gain in a population of rats fed a high fat diet. The rats were split into two separate groups in which one group would act as a control group whereas the other group would be fed Safflower Oil both for a period of four months. The results of this particular study found that the rats that were fed Safflower Oil accumulated significantly less fat than the control group. In this study, the rats were fed a high fat diet on purpose and so if a low fat diet was used then Safflower Oil may have resulted in weight loss.

The third and final ingredient that is included in USN CLA Green Tea is glycerol. A study undertaken by Leibel in 1980 investigated the effects of glycerol on hunger ratings, diet compliance and overall weight loss. The structure of the study involved a group of obese participants experiencing exposure to glycerol while the other group of obese participants were exposed to glucose. Unfortunately the results of the study was unable to find any differences between glycerol and glucose in terms of hunger ratings, diet compliance and overall weight loss which means that glycerol is unlikely to be an effective weight loss ingredient.

USN CLA Green Tea Side Effects

Woman With Stomach Ache 538

All things considered this product appears to be fairly safe to consume as long as you stick to the intended dosages. There will be people who are allergic to one of the three ingredients or who simply react negatively to them, possibly due to taking prescribed medications shortly before, during or after taking the product. It is always wise to consult with a doctor if you plan on taking a new diet supplement particularly if the product contains ingredients you have not come across before.

Green Tea

First up is green tea. This ingredient is a well-known alternative to coffee as it is seen as safer due to its lower caffeine content. That being said, you still need to be careful with green tea as it does still contain caffeine and excessive consumption will lead to side effects. When taken in moderation, green tea is thought to be safe for consumption and has very little in the way of side effects. However, consuming green tea in excessive quantities (e.g. more than five cups a day) can lead to side effects.

These side effects can include headaches, vomiting, dizziness and digestive distress among other things. If you are sensitive to caffeine or simply don’t really drink any in your day to day life then these side effects may be more likely. Dosages of up to 10-14 grams of green tea are considered fatal.

Safflower Oil

The second ingredient is safflower oil. This ingredient has no associated side effects at this point in time. While not strictly relevant to this product, be wary of safflower flour as it has been linked to miscarriages.

The third and final ingredient in this product is glycerol. Web MD claims that glycerol is generally considered safe to use although excessive use can lead to vomiting, headaches, dizziness and prolonged thirst.

How to Use

Woman With Pills 538

The recommendations posted on the official website are fairly vague and don’t really provide definitive instruction. For example, the website advises that you should take between 1-2 capsules at any one time and repeat this 2-3 times per day. In other words you should either be taking a minimum of three capsules per day or a maximum of six. The website recommends that the capsules can be taken either with a meal or after a meal.

The company is very clear about people who should avoid taking the product. For example, under no circumstances should you exceed the six capsule maximum dosage. You should also avoid the product if you are under eighteen years of age or are currently pregnant. Additionally, if you have a pre-existing medical condition it is always wise to consult with your doctor as many diet supplements can react negatively to prescription medication. The product may also lower blood sugar levels and so if you suffer from diabetes or other blood sugar related complications then you need to pay extra special attention.

Who Makes It?

A company called Ultimate Sports Nutrition makes USN CLA Green Tea. The company markets itself as a leader in both sports nutrition and bodybuilding supplements and claims to work closely with pharmaceutical companies across the globe to produce its products. USN also purportedly works hard to create relationships with professional athletes in a range of sports from professional bodybuilding to golf for the purposes of product development and marketing.

USN offers a vast range of products which can be broadly grouped into one of four categories, these being: sport endurance, weight loss, health/wellbeing and muscle gain. There is a handy feature on the website whereby you can view the range of products either individually or automatically grouped into one of the four above categories. This should make finding a product simple, especially if you don’t have an idea of what you want or cannot remember what it was called.

While USN is a multinational company they do have a base of operations in the UK as well, in this instance the building is located in Birmingham, which makes contacting the company fairly straightforward. There seem to be no issues with website ownership or registered addresses.

Where to Buy USN CLA Green Tea

USN CLA Green Tea is available from the official website. You can buy the product in bottles of 90 capsules (one month supply) and 45 capsules (2 week supply) and so if you require more than this you will have to buy multiple bottles. Also bear in mind that if you spend over £20 you are eligible for free UK delivery. The 45 capsule bottles are currently on offer from £16 down to £10.39. If you buy three bottles then you receive a 20% discount and free delivery, which means you get six weeks of product for a grand total of £24.94. If you would prefer to buy a 90 capsule bottle then these will set you back £14.59 down from £28. If you wish to take advantage of the 20% discount then you will need to buy three bottles at a total price of £35.02. This presents very good value as you are getting three months’ worth of product for just over £11 per month.

There is also a USN CLA branded green tea product that is available on Amazon, although this particular product is of a different design to the one featured on the USN website. This particular version advertises itself as using ‘soft gel capsules’ whereas the product on the USN website advertises itself as using ‘capsules’. Anyhow, the product advertised on Amazon contains 90 capsules (even though the picture is of a 45 capsule tub) and is priced at £17.25. This is more expensive than the product being sold on the USN official website and so it is probably better to buy the product from there. You can also reduce the price by signing up to an automated billing scheme where you can order several months of the product in advance, which will save you £1 per order.

Holland and Barrett also sell the product. Unfortunately, only the 45 capsule option is available at a total price of £16.45. This is the most expensive option of those mentioned so far but comes with the ability to pick it up from the high street rather than waiting for it be delivered by post.
