XLS Medical Carb Blocker Review

The XLS Medical Carb Blocker pills are marketed as having been specially developed to be able to act on carbohydrates. The product may be able to prevent weight gain by binding to some of these molecules and preventing them from being absorbed by the body.

Claimed weight loss benefits

Due to the specific nature of these pills, they do not target many of the 5 main areas of weight loss. In fact the manufacturer only claims that the pills target one of these: carbohydrate blocking. Although not expressly claimed, there are pieces of information on the XLS website that may suggest that the pills also have an appetite suppressing effect due to their potential ability to manage blood sugar levels. Diet and exercise plans are available through the official XLS Medical website.

How XLS Medical Carb Blocker Works

This product has been specifically designed to target a particular area of weight loss. Unlike some diet products that contain a range of ingredients for different weight loss effects, the XLS Medical Carb Blocker focuses only on reducing calories via the ‘blocking’ of carbs.

XLS Medical Carb Blocker is made up of a substance called PhaseLite™. The manufacturers explain that this is an active ingredient, meaning that it should affect the processes that go on inside the body. More specifically, it is explained that this substance restricts the ability of the enzyme alpha-amylase. By restricting the ability of this enzyme, it may mean that the body can no longer digest all of the complex carbohydrates that a user consumes into glucose.

If they have not been broken down by alpha-amylase, some carbohydrates that users consume may not be digested because they will be too large to be absorbed into the intestine. This in turn means that they should be excreted naturally out of the body and thus users store fewer calories.

It is important to note here however that whilst the pills may prevent the absorption of some carbohydrates, they are only claimed to reduce the function of alpha-amylase and will not inhibit it from working completely. This means that the more carbohydrates you eat, the bigger the proportion of carbohydrates that the alpha-amylase is actually able to break down and digest whilst using the pills.

The XLS website recognises that consuming these pills alone will not make a large difference in users’ weight and that for the best results they should change their eating habits. The manufacturers warn that the pills are ‘an important part of an overall weight management plan’ and are ‘not a miracle pill’. They also go on to stress that ‘effective weight management requires a long-term commitment to a healthy lifestyle’. On top of this advice they also provide links to a number of diet and exercise plans and consumers may sign up for tips and advice on losing weight including a 12-week challenge.

Key XLS Medical Carb Blocker Ingredients

woman wondering how diet pill works 538

The XLS Medical pills are made up of an active ingredient called PhaseLite™. The official website states that this is a clinically proven ingredient that results in weight loss. According to the manufacturers, it is a highly concentrated glycoprotein complex derived from a genetically modified organism-free vegetable source.

This vegetable source is called Phaseolus vulgaris and is more commonly known as the white kidney bean. Due to the potential ability of these beans to inhibit alpha-amylase ability (the enzyme that breaks down carbohydrates), PhaseLite™ is described as a ‘highly concentrated… glycoprotein complex’. This means that the ingredient is made from a category of protein that has carbohydrate groups attached to them.

The way that PhaseLite™ is made is also stated to play a role in the effectiveness of the pills since a special extraction process exclusive to InQpharm would have been used in order to retain the ‘optimal alpha amylase inhibiting capability’ so that the pills can work effectively even under ‘challenging gastrointestinal conditions’. To make sure that this is the case, InQpharm tells us that every batch of this ingredient is tested in terms of its in vitro enzyme inhibitory activity. Meaning that batches of the ingredient are put into test tubes and tested before they are certified as being effective and ready to leave the facility.

The manufacturers of PhaseLite™ explain that the key to the ingredient’s effectiveness lies in the fact that it works to promote weight loss via 2 different channels. The first of these is that it can supposedly reduce the amount of carbohydrates that the body digests and absorbs. This effect is thought to be the result of the white kidney bean extract used in PhaseLite™, which may stop alpha-amylase from working. It follows that the less carbohydrates are broken down, the fewer there are that can be digested and the ones that cannot be are thus not absorbed by the body and are excreted out as waste.

The second thing that the PhaseLite™ purportedly does is help to flatten or sustain plasma glucose levels. This is the amount of glucose that can be found in the blood stream. This is supposedly due to the fact that less carbohydrates may be broken down into starch and glucose which means that less is available to the body. The manufacturers of the compound say that this causes a ‘flattened blood glucose response’ after having eaten carbohydrates which prevents a subsequent surge in insulin and helps manage foods cravings.

XLS Medical Carb Blocker Clinical Studies

Clinical Researcher 538

The XLS Medical Carb Blocker description states that the main ingredient PhaseLite™ is clinically proven to work to reduce carbohydrate digestion and absorption. As well as this, the site includes a separate page that is dedicated to a clinical study that appears to be of the actual pills themselves.

PhaseLite™ has been the subject of one study that is given in support of the product by the manufacturers on their clinical studies page. This study was carried out in 2011. 123 volunteers were used as subjects all of whom were classified as being overweight or clinically obese. Subjects were given a daily diet plan, which totalled 500 calories less than their daily calorie needs per day and included a minimum of 40% carbohydrate content.

The subjects were then divided into 2 separate groups. The first of these was given a daily dose of 3g of PhaseLite™, the active ingredient in the XLS Medical Carb Blocker. The second group received an equivalent placebo.
None of the subjects were told into which group they were being placed and they were all made to take 2 tablets, 3 times a day with a liquid immediately prior to eating meals and this lasted for a duration of 12 weeks.

After the 12 weeks had come to an end, the results demonstrated that, on average, the group that had been given the PhaseLite™ dosage lost 3 times more body weight than the other dieters in the placebo group. It is also stated that the pills have been shown to be effective for weight maintenance. 49 out of the 123 volunteers that took part in the study described above continued to take PhaseLite™ although we are not told in what dosages. The results of this showed that the majority of the subjects continued to maintain their initial weight loss for 24 weeks.

This seems to be the only available published evidence surrounding this particular ingredient for weight loss purposes and relates specifically to a dosage of 3g. Although it would look as though the XLS Medical Carb Blocker pills may be effective for significant weight loss, no information has been given anywhere on the main site as to the quantity of PhaseLite™ that the pills contain.

XLS Medical Carb Blocker Side Effects

Woman With Stomach Ache 538

The XLS Medical Carb Blocker pills are stated, by the manufacturers, to be generally well tolerated by users. The one clinical study on the main ingredient in XLS Medical Carb Blocker did not highlight any adverse side effects. There are however, some potential side effects associated with the main component of the product – Phaseolus vulgaris extract. Side effects include but are not limited to stomach upset, diarrhoea, and vomiting.

Another study on a Phaseolus vulgaris preparation found that gastro-intestinal side effects may occur in some consumers, but that these are likely to reduce in time as the body gets used to the ingredient. The FDA also discusses several studies, none of which report any severe side effects associated with Phaseolus vulgaris.

How to Use

Woman With Pills 538

The main website for this product does provide users with some guidance on how they must take the pills. It is recommended by the manufacturers that you take 2 capsules, 3 times per day immediately prior to eating breakfast, lunch and dinner. You must not however exceed this recommended dose of 6 capsules per day.

It is recommended that you take the pills with a large glass of water but also drink small glasses between meals. This is usually recommended for two reasons. The first is that the water will enable the pills to get to work quicker inside the body and the second is that keeping yourself hydrated throughout the day will also help to minimise any risks of experiencing any side effects that may be caused as a result of taking the pills.

The manufacturers of the pills advise that users continue to use the pills for a duration of one month or more depending on their weight loss targets. This means that it may take up to 4 weeks for any results to be noticed.
Diet and exercise is still encouraged. For best results, it is advised that users also adopt a healthier lifestyle in general. The site itself gives examples of exercise plans and diets that will help users to lose weight and it is stressed that these pills are only an aid to weight management and that users should put in some effort in order to maintain long term reductions in body weight.

Due to the effects that the pills may have on the body, we would not recommend their use for the following groups of people:
– Pregnant or nursing women
– Those who have a family history of or are suffering from any digestive condition or related problems
– Those who may be allergic to any of the ingredients
– Those who do not consume a relatively large amount of carbohydrates as part of their daily diet
– Those who have any other underlying medical issue

If you are unsure about whether you should be taking these types of pills always consult a GP before doing so; this is particularly recommended if you suffer from any pre-existing medical conditions.

Who Makes It

XLS Medical is a fairly established company that has developed a small range of diet products, including XLS Medical Fat Binder pills. Very little information about the company is given on their website and there is no ‘About Us’ page which explains the nature and successes of the company. The only contact information provided on the official website is an email address.

Despite the lack of transparency surrounding the company, it does not appear to have been involved in any adjudications concerning issues such as false advertising. The company itself do provide relevant information about what potential consumers should expect from the use of the pills and also what they should not. Unlike some other companies, XLS Medical also stresses that the XLS Medical Carb Blocker pills are not to be used and should not be thought of as some kind of ‘miracle pill’.

Where to Buy XLS Medical Carb Blocker

XLS Medical Carb Blocker is not available to buy from the official XLS Medical website itself. Instead, customers are directed to other retailers, such as Amazon, Superdrug and Lloyds Pharmacy.

The product can be purchased through the XLS Medical store on Amazon. Here the pills are priced at £17.99 for 60 capsules which appears to have been discounted from £29.99. No charge is required for shipping services. Baring in mind however that the manufacturers of the pills recommend that users take 6 of these capsules per day this number of pills would only last 10 days.

The pills can also be purchased from the high street chain Boots. The pills are sold for £23.99 for a pack of 60 capsules and if ordering online users must pay a delivery charge of £2.95 if they do not meet the minimum requirement of a total spend of £45 or more to qualify for free delivery.

Superdrug advertises them at the same price as Boots, although it does have an offer on XLS products. If you purchase 2 boxes of the pills you will get the second for half of the price meaning that 2 boxes would cost you around £35.99 making the effective price of 1 box just £18 which is almost the same as the price of the pills on Amazon. Superdrug also offers free standard UK delivery on orders over £10 so even just 1 box of the pills will qualify.

You can also purchase the pills via the Lloyds Pharmacy website. The price here for a box of 60 capsules is £22.49. There are no current offers or discounts on this product and the site also does not seem to have a rewards based system. Users will have to pay a shipping and handling fee on top of this price unless they meet the £35 or more total order requirement for free standard shipping. The price of shipping is quoted at the checkout as being £2.95.

From Tesco, the pills are sold for £30. At the moment however, they are on sale and have been discounted by a third meaning that they are now only £20.00. Users may collect this item for free in Tesco stores, but if potential consumers want to place an order online then the cost of delivery will vary depending on the date and time of the delivery slot that has been booked.

Overall Verdict

There is a small body of scientific evidence supporting the carb-blocking abilities of Phaeolus vulgaris – the main ingredient in XLS Medical Carb Blocker. Whilst the product may have a slight beneficial effect for some people and XLS Medical do offer a selection of diet and exercise advice, there are some issues with the product. Ingredient quantities are not revealed on the official website, and the company behind the product is not very transparent, providing only an email address in the ‘Contact Us’ section of the website. The pills may not be suitable for everybody’s diet, and some people may wish to avoid them due to potential digestive side effects.
