XLS Medical vs. Proactol Plus – Which is a Better Fat Binder?

XLS Medical has caused a stir recently thanks to its high profile marketing campaign. But, how does it shape up (or help you to shape up) in comparison to other fat binding products?

This review will compare XLS Medical with one of its competitors, Proactol Plus, by looking at the weight loss claims made, customer feedback, the price, as well as how each product works.

The Active ingredients

At first glance, Proactol plus and XLS Medical seem like very different products in terms of their active ingredients: Proactol plus is made from a substance derived from Mexican cactus plants, and XLS Medical has the main ingredient of Litramine™, which is derived from dried prickly pear leaves, as well as added fat-soluble vitamins.

The Prickly Pear CactusHowever, when the advertising literature is read more closely, it appears that actually these two diet pills have active ingredients derived from the same plant, Opuntia Ficus Indica, also known as the pear cactus, or prickly pear.

The manufacturers of XLS Medical have trademarked Litramine™, suggesting that their individual blend or derivative of prickly pear leaf is effective enough to protect from competitors within the diet pill market. Whilst the actual final product may be slightly different, the source, in this case, is identical. This conclusion is supported by both the way in which each product works, and the statistics put forward as a result of clinical trials.

Opuntia Ficus Indica has been clinically proven to positively affect blood cholesterol levels, and therefore reduce cardiovascular risk.

The only significant difference between Proactol plus and XLS Medical is that XLS medical is supplemented with fat-soluble vitamins A, D3 and E-acetate, to prevent a deficiency caused by the nature of this diet pill. However, it would be easy to supplement the use of Proactol plus with a daily multivitamin to make up for this deficit.

Both XLS Medical and Proactol plus claim to be clinically proven to be effective weight loss measures, with ingredients that are clinically proven to cause weight loss, lower blood cholesterol, and inhibit the absorption of fat into the small intestine.

How do they work?

Essentially, Proactol plus and XLS Medical work in the same way, by providing additional insoluble fibre that binds with dietary fat in the stomach. This fat-fibre complex is too large to pass through the walls of the small intestine, and so the altered fat passes through the body without being absorbed. This means that fewer calories are taken into the body, which, when combined with a healthy balanced diet and exercise, leads to a calorie deficit, and weight loss.

XLS medical then releases fat soluble vitamins into the body, to prevent any deficiency due to the lost fat intake. Proactol plus also claims to have the effect of a suppression of appetite, by making the user feel fuller for longer. This is achieved by the soluble fibre element of Proactol plus, which forms a gel like substance in the stomach, which slows down digestion and the passage of food through the body. How effective are they?

It is interesting to note the statistics that both Proactol plus and XLS medical put forward to demonstrate their effectiveness. XLS Medical’s manufacturers claim that XLS Medical “binds up to 27% of dietary fats in your stomach”. XLS have also claimed that it works to help you “lose weight up to three times faster than dieting alone“.

Proactol Plus puts forward two statistics about the effectiveness of their diet pill- use of the tablets can reduce calorie intake by up to 248 calories a day, and the diet pill can prevent up to 28% of dietary fat from entering your system, by binding it and causing it to be excreted.

As these statistics are based on clinical trials that are performed using very specific circumstances, these claims should be taken with a pinch of salt. However, based upon the claims made alone, it is very difficult to choose a clear winner out of XLS Medical and Proactol Plus.

Consumer feedback

Feedback from users of both diet pills appears to be mixed, with a considerable proportion of reviews for both products claiming that whilst some weight loss occurred whilst using the products, it was not as much as expected. It is likely that the claims listed above, especially XLS Medical’s claim that it causes up to 3 times as much weight loss as dieting alone, have raised customers’ expectations considerably.

According to our estimations based upon the reliable customer reviews we found, around 40% of XLS Medical users appear to feel “conned” or “ripped off” because of their lack of results, especially when considering the expense of the product. Proactol, in general, receives less negative feedback, although results do seem to be slow to emerge in some patients.

Side effects

With both Proactol plus and XLS Medical being derived from a natural plant source, there should be very few side effects, especially compared to chemically based diet pills. That being said, some users have reported side effects for both Proactol plus and XLS Medical.

For XLS Medical, despite claims that it is gentle on the system and doesn’t interfere with the “body’s natural workings”, reported side effects include bloating, diarrhoea, constipation, headaches and even sickness. The possible causes for these side effects are investigated fully elsewhere on dietpill-reviews in this article. It is recommended that to avoid some of these side effects, plenty of liquids are drunk as a part of a diet regime, and meals that are very high in fat are avoided or eaten only in moderation. Proactol plus also has some side effects, although it is important to note that not all users of the pill report these problems, and they are not persistent side effects. These include constipation, loose stools, and bloating. Loose stools are more likely to occur after meals with a high fat content, as this fat is being passed through the body rather than absorbed.

A squeeze on your wallet?

XLS medical is available to buy at a large variety of retailers, including Boots and Asda, as well as at online retailers such as Amazon. The price for XLS medical varies immensely, with 180 tablets, which is a month’s supply, costing £59.99 in Boots, although it can be found slightly cheaper elsewhere. This puts XLS medical amongst the more expensive diet pills available, especially considering that they only claim to hold one weight loss element, fat binding. With XLS Medical, it is definitely best to shop around to avoid paying over the odds. Meanwhile, Proactol plus is available on its official website for £35.95, with large discounts for bulk buying several months’ worth of pills at a time.

Our recommendation

Based upon the claims made, as well as the contents of each diet pill alone, it is hard to choose a clear winner out of XLS Medical and Proactol plus. However when factoring in feedback from current customers, Proactol plus has the edge, with seemingly more success stories, and less customers feeling ripped off. There is a middle group of consumers, who are disappointed with the product, despite showing achieving some weight loss; these customers are a significant group in both products’ customer base.
The cost of each diet pill supports the idea that Proactol plus is slightly superior to XLS Medical; the extra cost for XLS medical cannot be justified, when there are cheaper alternatives that are just as effective, if not more so, available on the market.

Whichever product is used, it is important to remember that the claims made are based upon clinical trials which provided optimum weight loss conditions. To replicate results, weight loss success is more likely if combined with a balanced healthy calorie controlled diet and regular exercise.
